Computer lcd monitor used as a t.v.?

im trying to use my old lcd computer monitor as a t..v. The cheapest conversion box i found was 150. but my question is do i really need it. because i found out my dvd player which is hooked up to my cable has an s-video out port what if i were to buy a male to male s-video cable hook that up to a vga to s-video adapter then connect the adapter to a female to female vga connector and that connector to my monitor and then use a digital composite cable for audio and connect that to a surround sound system. so it would basically be dvd player s-video out port ---->male male s-video cable----->vga to s-video adapter------->female female vga gender changer------->lcd monitor. would this be possible or do i have to go with the conversion box?
