Improving credit score?

I’m writing letters to a few companies and trying to remove late payments from my credit on my closed credit cards. I am also writing letters to the inquiries asking them to be removed unless proof of authorization. I’m paying my bills on time and paying off the rest of them. What else can I do to raise my credit score? Thanks I am trying to buy a house in about 4 months.
