What's the use of homework?

I mean, I understand if it is just work that needs to be finished from cl or practicing math problems, but other then that, why give homework? People don't want to spend their whole day with their face in a text book, all for what? A good grade? A year or two later you don't even remember it. Schools these days have major drawbacks and problems.
